FAQs from Outdoor Workers
Q. HOW DOES IT WORK?
A. I start by constructing your resume, (this is just writing down your experience level and what your specialties are) then I use my resources to start connecting you with potential employers. When I secure a fair wage I see to it that you received your earnings without any hassle.
Q. WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE EXPERIENCE?
A. Experience levels can vary! If guiding is something you want to do, then nothing should stop you. Living without passion could be a rocking chair regret that you don't want hanging on your conscience. Bottom line is, I can work with almost any experience level, let's get you some experience! Everyone has to start somewhere.
Q. WHAT IF I'VE ALREADY BUILT MY CAREER?
A. I come across the question pretty often, "I already built my connections for summer and fall, why should I have to pay you for that?". The answer to that question is, you don't. You built those connections on your own, I had nothing to do with that. I only collect from the connections I help you with. Outfitters pay me direct and pay you direct, separately. If that means you only need spring work and nothing else, that's what I will do. You are your own boss, you make your schedule you pick and choose when you want to use my services.
Q. I ONLY WANT PART-TIME WORK?
A. You are your own boss. You get to make your schedule and you get to pick and choose when and where you want to work. If you call me and say, "Kristen, I only want to work for a few weeks." or "I want to work for a few months." or "Get me as much work as possible.", that is what I am going to do. I don't tell you what to do, you tell me what you want me to do for you.
Q. MY PRIORITY IS TRAVELING?
A. Oh boy, let's talk. I have connections all over! If you have a particular area in mind, there's a good chance I can get you there. I can even help you book the flights and let you know what to pack. You have someone in your corner. Traveling is one of the sweet perks to working in the hunting industry.
Q. I DON'T WANT TO WORK FOR SKETCHY OUTFITTERS?
A. I don't want you to work for sketchy outfitters either. I do a lot of homework before you ever see that work oportunity in your email; and if I come up with an outfitter you've heard bad things about, you don't have to go. Remember, you are your own boss, I'm a service to you. You call the shots.
Q. I DON'T LIKE SOMEONE TELLING ME WHAT TO DO?
A. You are your own boss. You tell me what you want. If you don't want to work, you don't work. If you want to travel, you travel. This is about building your career, and doing what you love while you make money.
Q. I WANT TO GO TO GUIDE SCHOOL DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?
A. There are a number of outdoorsmen schools available to you. I can't say about every single one out there, any experience is going to help get you started in the right direction. My recomendation however would be Swan Mountain Wilderness Guide School or Royal Tine Guide and Packer School; both of these schools are based out of Montana. If your looking for a Canadian guide school, I've heard good things about Yukon Guide School.
Q. I HEARD ABOUT A CONTRACT, WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?
A. Yes, before I can legally connect you with any potential work opportunity a contract must be signed. It is an annual contract that basically says that I as a consultant can negotiate on your behalf, and it stinks, but it does takes a few pieces of paper to say that. I don't like to do things half-assed what can I say?
Q. WHAT AREAS DO YOU WORK WITH? WHAT OUTFITTERS DO YOU KNOW?
A. I work with outfitters all around the globe. My "reach" is as far as you want it to be. I spend my whole career in the outdoor industry building connections from North America all the way to Europe.
Q. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A HUNTING GUIDE?
A. I truly believe there is a place for everyone who wants to put their time and hard-work into it. When we get on the phone I'll let you know what we need to work on; if you need experience, learning a skill or getting the right gear... Remember, with me, you've got someone in your corner.
